S. Korea decides not to renew GSOMIA. Where are Seoul-Washington-Tokyo security ties headed? 한일 간 지소미아 종료. 한미일 군사 협력 전망은?

On August 22, the South Korean government announced that it would not be renewing GSOMIA, its military information-sharing agreement with Japan. GSOMIA is the first bilateral military agreement struck between the two countries since Korea's independence in 1945, and allows them to share confidential military information. The Presidential Blue House attributed its decision not to renew GSOMIA on Japan's removal of South Korea from its whitelist of preferential trading partners without citing a clear reason. The top office also said the current administration had never received meaningful intelligence from Japan that was used to conduct analysis on North Korea's missile tests, while Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe once again reiterated that South Korea should uphold its promises with other parties, following Seoul's decision not to renew the agreement. In this week's edition of 'Foreign Correspondents', we sit down with our panel of journalists for an updated look at the current state of security ties and alliances in Northeast Asia with the clock running out on GSOMIA.

8월 22일 한일 군사정보보호협정(GSOMIA)가 종료됐다. 한일 GSOMIA는 1945년 한국이 광복을 맞은 후 처음으로 일본과 맺은 군사협정으로, 협정을 맺은 국가 간에 군사 기밀을 서로 공유할 수 있도록 맺는 것을 의미한다. 청와대 측은 일본이 명확한 근거 없이 수출 심사 우대국 목록, 즉 '화이트 리스트'에서 한국을 제외한 것을 언급하며, 지소미아 종료의 책임이 일본에 있음을 분명히 했다. 또한 청와대는 현 정부 들어 일본으로부터 북한 미사일 정보를 받아 분석에 활용한 적이 한 번도 없다고 밝혔다. 지소미아 종료 후, 아베 신조 일본 총리는 "한국에 국가 간 약속을 지킬 것을 촉구하고 싶다"고 주장했다. 미국 정부에서도 이 상황을 예의주시하며 다양한 의견을 쏟아내고 있는데... 이번 주 에선 한일 간 지소미아 종료를 계기로 각국의 동맹 관계에 대해 함께 이야기를 나눠본다.
