Pascaline’s life was forever changed after being raped by armed men in eastern DRC. But another challenge she faced was the rejection of her husband and community. Victims of sexual violence are commonly stigmatized in many cultures, thus suffering not only the trauma of rape, but of losing their families and livelihoods.
With the support of a local counsellor, Pascaline and her husband overcame the tragedy and are forging a future together. However, the rejection of their families and community and subsequent loss of their livelihood has made recovery an uphill battle.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8), we are featuring stories that illustrate women’s resilience in the face of sexual violence, adversity and situations of conflict.
